NAIROBI, Kenya – May 14, 2013: Mdundo.com, the first African music platform to distribute free and legal music, announced today that popular music artists Sauti Sol, Prezzo and Eric Wainaina will now be offering their music to fans for free on the company’s platform. With three more Kenyan superstars giving out their music for free, Mdundo is moving closer to become Kenya’s number one online music site.

Anyone in the world can access Mdundo.com to instantly receive free music from over 200 top Kenyan artists. Users sign up with their phone number to access the vast library of free local music. Mobile-web version even allows non-smartphone owners to become users.

The company just recently shifted from a scratch card service to a free platform and has seen significant growth with more than 1000 new users every week.

Describing the current take-off, Gustav Ericsson, CEO of Mdundo.com, explains, “The music industry has been extremely open towards our new concept. From day one we have had full support from the Kenyan artists. We’re encouraged by the enthusiasm and look forward to getting even more artists on our platform, distributing their music for everyone to access.

For new artists reach is crucial, but even the bigger artist wants to give the music out for free. Prezzo explains his move, "The good thing is that fans can access the songs from anywhere and easily download the music. In addition artists get something out of the service, It's a win-win situation."

Through Mdundo.com, artists can still earn money from their music. Revenue is generated through advertisements on the site and is shared evenly amongst artists.

Frasha from P-Unit, also a co-founder of Mdundo.com echoes the enthusiasm for opening up his music, and that of his peers, to a wider audience. “Until now, artists have struggled to find platforms that allow them to distribute their music locally,” he says.
